How to install a domain on the dedicated server?

This manual describes the domain installation on the dedicated server with OVHm. It doesn't concern RaQSun/Cobalt. If you have this server read CobaltDomainInstall.

In order to use a domain on your dedicated server, you need to configure certain amount of tools. The domain must enable:
- access to web server together with databases - to create dynamic websites;
- access to FTP to share files;
- access to mail server;
all those services may be configured manually, however, we'll do it with Webmin, OVHm.

Before you start:
  • you need to have a dedicated server, not the Cobalt server or website hosting service;
  • you need to have a domain
  • you need to have Webmin and OVHm installed, if you don't, it means that you have a Cobalt server and it has it's own interface to domain management.
  • DNS of your domain need to be correctly configured. DNS 1: Your server, DNS 2: You may check it in whois.

Note: If the domain is in OVH, and the DNS are not correctly configured, read ConfigDNSDomainDed.

Installation of a domain may be simple. You need to connect to OVHm , which will help you with it. You just need to choose some options, described below. The installation may take about 30 minutes or even less when you get proficient.

  • How OVHm works?
Webmin is a web-based interface that allows server configuration. It's divided into modules, where each of them configures certain elements.
OVHm is a Webmin modules designed by OVH, it allows server management, including domain installation. All operations of OVHm may be done manually.

Domain installation:
1. Connect to OVHm.
Open a web browser (IE, Mozzila, Opera). There are two possibilities:
- if you don't have SSl activated

- if you have SSL activated

Note: xx.xx.xx.xx is a server's Ip or its name e.g.

2. Provide domain information.
Insert information about your domain and choose options you'd like to activate.
  • Domain name : insert the domain name without www or the name of subdomain
  • Password and confirm password : the same for MySQL, and FTP
  • Contact email : that will be attached to server signature, as in case of 404 error
  • Telnet/SSH : this option enables you to permit direct access for domain administrators
  • Create a MySQL database : add a database to a domain to create websites in PHP
  • Be verbose : displays more details during operation

3. Technology in action
When the operation is finished, you'll be redirected to the domain website.

First line contains login (cannot be changed)that is used for Telnet/SSH and FTP. It's also used as MySQL database name and login. Here it's "test"
Click "Return to Index" to return to OVHm.

4. Domain activation
The domain is already configured on the server. You just need to update your configuration. To do it, click "restart all services to valid changes".

5. DNS2 activation
If you want to have as DNS 2, use our manual InstallSecondaryDNS.

To check if the domain has been successfully added, try to log in to:


  • SSH test
If telnet/ssh is active, you may connect with help of such a program as Putty.

Login: login created by OVHm
Password: the password you've provided

  • FTP test
Use any FTP client:

Login: login created by OVHm
Password: the password you've provided
Remote directory : www (if you want to access a directory visible in the web, in other case - none)

If you're in the company's network, you need to activate PASV (passive mode) form time to time.

  • Email test
OVHm has automatically created an account postmaster@yourdomain.tld
